"She rolls down the window to tell my sister we can't come in. We stare at her, wanting her bread, but more than that wanting to poke the arrogance out of her eyes and smash the pride of ownership that curls her chewing mouth."(Page 9)

Image result for white privilege     From reading the first couple of pages I can take away a couple things from this book. The speaker of the book is a young black girl. The story most likely takes place during a time when segregation still exists. Imagine being told that you cannot go into a restaurant due to the color of your skin. As a young black female this is something that hits close to home.  My ancestors had to experience this and worse, which is very disturbing. White privilege is something that has been around for a long time. "White privilege is a set of advantages and/or immunities that white people benefit from on a daily basis beyond those common to all others. White privilege can exist without white people's conscious knowledge of its presence and it helps to maintain the racial hierarchy in this country."(https://www.mtholyoke.edu)  With all of the recent event Happening in our society, it seems like the term "white privilege" is often brought into the mix. With the way America was founded and the thought process behind it, it seems like white privilege has been around and unfortunately not going anywhere. I feel that this book will have to do with how it truly felt to be a black female in America at that time. Regardless of race, we can all learn from this book and take away some important lessons.

"Cholly and Mrs.Breedlove fought each other with a darkly brutal formalism that was paralleled only with a darkly brutal formalism that was paralleled only by their lovemaking. Tacitly they had agreed not to kill each other."(Page 43)

Image result for physical abuse    Physical abuse is something that should never be tolerated in any relationship. Cholly and Mrs.Breedlove have a very interesting relationship that included violence. Cholly is a drunk and takes out his feelings on his wife. This is something that unfortunately happens in a lot of relationships. "One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence." (loveisrespect.org) I have been blessed to have not experienced this personally, but I cannot imagine what this feels like. Most would describe it as feeling trapped and not sure how to escape the situation. A child could be involved, he could be the main source of income, or you could stay simply because you love the person. Whatever the case may be, no one deserves to be treated that way. There is always an option to get out of the relationship, even though that is easier said than done. I pray that whoever is in that relationship finds help and things get better.
